The week was filled with a number of great story lines and memorable moments that truly capture the spirit of Manitoba, and we really turned UofW’s Duckworth Centre into a Badminton Facility!

As a hosting province we broke our own record of # of entries in a national tournament with 60!  Two of these athletes were the only aboriginal athletes in the competition, who drove from Grand Rapids with family to attend this prestigious tournament.  Although they are seasoned veterans on the Manitoba Rural Super Series Circuit, attending their first national tournament took a big step of bravery and they proved that it doesn’t matter where you come from in Manitoba, you can do whatever you set your mind to!

Manitoba also had representation from Stonewall, Selkirk, Whitemouth, Manitou and Winnipeg!

Marj Niemi of Lac du Bonnet, one of Manitoba’s up and coming officials took her first crack at the National Umpires Certification and passed with flying colours!  Marj Niemi is now Manitoba’s only female national official and will be assisting with some of our local umpires courses in the near future.  Marj now gets to travel across Canada during the year umpiring and service judging some of Canada’s most important national competitions!

Athletically Manitoba had a LOT of great matches during the week and it was great to see all the young athletes putting themselves forward in national competition in such a fearless manner.  Some notable results include Arnish Patel’s Bronze Medal in U17 Boys Singles, Andrew Harrison’s Bronze Medal in U23 Boys Singles, Ian Laidlaw/Dale Kinley’s Bronze Medal in U23 Boys Doubles & Melissa Liew/Kathryne Desautels Bronze Medal in U23 Girls Doubles.  We’re looking forward to seeing all these athletes compete again next year!

Here’s a video re-cap of how great the tournament went!

We now look forward to hosting the Yonex 2016 Senior National Badminton Championships at Winnipeg Winter Club, February 3-6, 2016.  Hope to see you there!
